Storytelling in Hotel Marketing
There are hotels you never forget. Not because they had the largest spa or served the best cappuccino, but because they made you feel something. Something you cannot filter for on a booking platform. Warmth. Character. Atmosphere. A certain way of life. Sometimes, you cannot quite put your finger on why a place moved you so deeply – and that is precisely the magic. That is storytelling.
Many people think storytelling means putting the history of a hotel on its “About Us” page. But true storytelling goes much further. It is the art of bringing a hotel’s soul to life – in every encounter, every image, and every sentence. It is the invisible promise a guest carries with them from the moment they start searching until the moment they leave. Storytelling means moving beyond dry facts and embedding messages in stories that spark emotions and stay with people. For us, that means telling stories about people, places, and moments – not just square metres, star ratings, and breakfast buffets.
Why a hotel needs more than good reviews
In a world of hotel comparisons, review platforms, and booking sites, it is no longer enough to offer “beautiful rooms” or a “great location”. Location, facilities, and price all matter, but they are ultimately interchangeable. What stays with people cannot be measured. Simon Sinek calls this the “Golden Circle”: start with the why. Why does this hotel exist? What idea or dream was behind it in the first place? Why should people choose to spend their time here? That “why” is the heart of the story. It is where the stories that resonate with guests begin – because people can sense when something is genuine.
Bringing the soul of a hotel to life
The true source of every good story does not lie in the marketing department, but in the DNA of the hotel. In the people who shape it. In the values that guide the way it operates. In the attitude with which guests are welcomed. Whether a hotel is modern and urban, deeply connected to nature, or rooted in tradition, these are not simply marketing slogans. They are threads woven into a living brand personality. When you know what lies at the heart of your hotel, you are no longer telling a loose collection of nice anecdotes. You are telling one bigger, coherent story. One that has meaning – and creates meaning.
More than marketing – a genuine promise
Friendliness should go without saying, as should a good product. But without a recognisable personality, a hotel remains just one place among many.
Storytelling is what encourages guests not only to return, but to share their experiences with others. It turns guests into ambassadors. And in hospitality, where experiences are at the heart of the product, this kind of communication is particularly powerful. After all, guests do not book beds – they book a feeling.
A story that runs through everything
Storytelling is more than a beautiful photo on Instagram. It is the thread that runs through everything: the website, social media posts, the pre-arrival email, the welcome message in the room. Every moment is a chapter, and every chapter needs to reflect the core story. If a hotel stands for adventure, that should be reflected in the breakfast experience just as much as in the tone of its guest communications. If it stands for peace and retreat, guests should be able to sense that from the imagery alone. Consistency is the invisible glue that holds it all together.
There are countless examples from our day-to-day work. When developing mama thresl in Leogang, we built the storytelling around the lifestyle concept “urban soul meets the alps” – a coherent idea carried through everything from the architecture and communication to the distinctive handwriting used on the menus.
At Stäfeli – Relais du Silence in Lech am Arlberg, the focus was on the story of a small, intimate retreat for those who appreciate peace and quiet – a place where tranquillity, warmth, and personal space are not just communicated, but genuinely felt and consciously lived.
At Hotel Bergbaur in Salzburg’s Pinzgau region, the story revolves around the ‘Crazy Farming Hotel’: a lovingly eccentric farmer family, authentic hospitality, a laid-back rural-meets-jazz atmosphere, regional produce, and sustainable values.
Conclusion
Storytelling in hotel marketing is not an optional extra. It is the foundation. It is the key to creating a distinctive brand that is more than a name and a logo. When you know your brand’s essence and embody it in every detail, you are not creating an advertising story. You are inviting people to become part of a story. And perhaps that is where your next chapter begins: with asking why your hotel exists – and having the courage to make the answer visible.
Our role is to uncover precisely that story. We listen, immerse ourselves in the hotel, ask the right questions, and bring its unique story to the surface. We do not simply put that story into beautiful words; we bring it to life across every channel. The result is a common thread running through every area of the hotel and every aspect of its communication. A place to stay becomes a place people long to experience, a stay becomes an unforgettable experience, and a first click becomes the beginning of a lasting relationship.
